With the ongoing turmoil in the banking industry and yesterday’s announcement of 10,750 job cuts @ Wachovia, the employment market is a continued hot topic of discussion in the Queen City.

Amidst this climate, the recruiting team @ The Darton Group is consistently being asked the following question…

“How can I optimize my marketability in the Charlotte region?”

Darton leader Rochelle Rivas offers the following 4 tips to address this common question.

  1. Deploy a “concentric networking” strategy.  Step #1 is to communicate with your family members & friends to let them know you are in the job market. Your inner circle represents the first ring of your network.  Seek to obtain 1 to 2 contacts from each person in your first ring.  These new contacts will represent the 2nd ring of your network.  Our experience demonstrates that senior-level talent will typically find their next job in the 7th ring of their concentric network.
  2. Emphasize accomplishments & results on your resume.  You’ve heard the long-standing advice to focus your resume on accomplishments & results vs. job titles & job descriptions.  This advice is right on the mark.  That said, many job seekers have ample opportunity to enhance the accomplishments & results areas on their resumes.  Audit your resume and ask others to do the same.
  3. Invest in a new interview suit.  The world of fashion changes rapidly for both men and women.  Tackle your next interview in style with an up-to-date, modern suit.
  4. Use the “STAR” method during your next interview.  You can truly “stand out in the crowd” by deploying this proven strategy for behavioral-based interviews.  What is STAR?

    STAR Method

    Situation: give an example of a situation you were involved in that resulted in a positive outcome

    Task: describe the tasks involved in that situation

    Action: talk about the various actions involved in the situation’s task

    Results: what results directly followed because of your actions

    Before the interview process, identify two or three of your top selling points and determine how you will convey these points (with demonstrated STAR stories) during the interview.
