XBRL (Extensible Business Reporting Language) is an XML-based language similar to that used on the web.  XBRL is being developed for the automation of business information requirements, such as the preparation, sharing, and analysis of financial reports, statements, and audit schedules.

The DARTON team recently reviewed an article written by Karen Kernan for JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTANCY that provides a great overview of XBRL from a global perspective.  Ms. Kernan interviewed early adopters around the world to learn about how they are utilizing XBRL.
